Welcome to the Cape Hope 500! This briefing will provide you with essential information about the route and safety for your journey. Pay close attention to road-sharing rules, safety on mountain passes, and key pinch points along the way. This race is unsupported, so you're on your own for navigation, supplies, and decisions, but remember: safety is a priority.
Equal Opportunity Rule.
The roads are shared with vehicles, so even though you're racing, you must obey all road signs and traffic signals. The "Equal Opportunity" rule means that if everyone follows the rules, no one will feel pressured to take unnecessary risks.
Urban Traffic.
Starting in Cape Town's busy Waterfront area, you'll face traffic congestion and the challenge of navigating through city streets. This initial section can be tricky, so stay focused as you balance the demands of the route with the risk of vehicles.
The Cape Town mountains you'll explore are scenic but come with risks, especially in isolated sections. Although incidents of petty theft have decreased, it's still wise to be cautious if you're riding alone, especially at night.
@10km – The Beach Section
This 10 km stretch along the beach is tough. The tide might not be in your favor, making the ride harder than expected. It's a test of perseverance.
@161km – Service Road and Train Line
This section requires precise navigation. You'll follow a service road, and at one point, you have to walk along the train tracks. It will be clear when you get there—just follow your GPS closely and avoid taking any shortcuts.
@350km – Bike Lanes
Cape Town provides bike lanes, and you'll begin using them at the 350 km mark. Please ensure you stay on the designated lanes for your safety.
@360km – Switching from Bike Lane to Road
At this point, you'll cross from the bike lane to the road. This switch can be nerve-wracking, but keep calm. You'll ride on the main road or the service road about 2 meters to the left of the main road.
@364km – N1 Highway for 430m
Yes, you'll need to ride on the N1 for a brief stretch (430 meters). Don’t panic—stay left and take the first exit. It's only a short distance.
@412km – Tokai and Silvermine Entry
You’ll be entering the Silvermine section near Noordhoek Peak. While technically you'll need a Wildcard or day pass, some riders manage to sneak through near the boom gates. Be cautious and respectful—plan ahead if you’re unsure about this. Note the previous incident with Nicholas Dlamini, where a refusal to cooperate at this boom gate checkpoint led to an altercation, they broke his arm. Handle this area with care.
@480km – Mountain Dwellers
As you approach the private country road section, you'll encounter steep climbs and may have to walk. In this area, you might pass by people living in temporary shelters.
They’re usually harmless, but be cautious, as petty theft has been reported. Be friendly, but stay vigilant.
This is a brief section, and soon after, you’ll reach Noon Gun, where you’ll climb up and over again.
Stay safe, follow the rules, and enjoy the adventure that is the Cape Hope 500! Each section of the route has its unique challenges, but with careful planning and a focus on safety, you’ll cross the finish line with a sense of accomplishment and stories to tell.
