FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
Everything you need to know about navigating the wild with Gravalist.
1. What is Gravalist Ultra? expand_more
Gravalist Ultra is the definitive digital infrastructure for ultra-distance bikepacking racing. It replaces manual spreadsheets with intelligent pacing, predictive weather, and AI waypoint extraction.
2. How does the AI Waypoint feature work? expand_more
You can upload an event's race manual or PDF. Our AI scans the text to extract critical resupply points, water sources, and hazards, then snaps them perfectly to your GPX route.
3. Can I use Gravalist without cell service? expand_more
Yes. Gravalist is built for the backcountry. You can download vector maps for entire regions offline, ensuring you never lose your map or turn-by-turn navigation.
4. How do I download offline maps? expand_more
In the app's Map settings, select "Download Region". You can bound an area around your planned GPX route. Because we use vector maps, the file sizes are significantly smaller than traditional tile maps.
5. Does the weather forecast adjust to my pacing? expand_more
Absolutely. Knowing it's raining at the finish line today doesn't help. We project your arrival time at various waypoints and fetch the wind/weather forecast for that specific time.
6. How does Gravalist handle tracking without draining battery? expand_more
We utilize highly optimized background location pinging. We take high-fidelity location readings and batch upload them to preserve battery life, far more efficiently than standard dot-watch trackers.
7. Can event organizers track riders live? expand_more
Yes, the Organizer Portal provides a unified dashboard where race directors can monitor all authenticated riders for safety and geofence auditing.
8. How do I upload a GPX file? expand_more
You can import standard GPX or FIT files directly from your device, or sync them via integrations with popular routing tools.
9. Is Gravalist compatible with Garmin or Wahoo? expand_more
Yes, your finalized itinerary and route can be exported to standard formats to sync directly with your dedicated head unit.
10. What surface data does Gravalist show? expand_more
We classify route paths into paved, gravel, singletrack, and unrideable "hike-a-bike" sections to help you prepare your gear.
11. How do I upgrade to Gravalist Pro? expand_more
You can upgrade via the in-app subscription portal or click "Upgrade" in our site header. Pro features unlock unlimited AI Waypoints and premium weather forecasting.
12. Can I broadcast safety alerts as an organizer? expand_more
Yes. Our portal allows organizers to send localized push notifications. If a bridge is washed out, you can set a geo-fence so riders get alerted when they are 5km away.
13. How does the dynamic pacing algorithm work? expand_more
We continuously calculate your average moving speed against the upcoming elevation profile. If you get delayed by a storm, the app re-calculates your arrival times at future checkpoints instantly.
14. What happens if I deviate from the route? expand_more
We will alert you that you are off-course, but because our maps are fully downloaded, you can safely navigate back to the main track using offline routing.
15. Does the app provide turn-by-turn navigation? expand_more
Yes. We provide native turn-by-turn prompts that work independently of an internet connection.
16. Can I plan resupply stops directly in the app? expand_more
Yes, using Google Places integration, we can identify 24-hour gas stations and grocery stores along your track.
17. Does the app calculate my required water intake? expand_more
By looking at the distance, elevation, and forecasted temperature between water waypoints, Gravalist provides a safety rating so you know how much capacity to carry.
18. Are bivvy and sleep spots shown on the map? expand_more
We map public shelters and allow organizers or AI to identify safe bivvy zones. However, always obey local trespassing laws.
19. How do I manage my subscription? expand_more
Subscriptions are handled seamlessly via your Apple App Store or Google Play Store account settings.
20. Does Gravalist work on both iOS and Android? expand_more
Yes! We offer a native experience for both major platforms.
21. What happens if an event has a mandatory rest rule? expand_more
Our geofence and tracking logs provide immutable records to organizers, proving you stopped for the required duration.
22. How are offline maps stored on my device? expand_more
They are securely cached within the app's isolated storage directory. You can easily manage and delete old regions to free up space.
23. Can I use the app for a casual weekend trip? expand_more
Absolutely! While built for the extremes of ultra-racing, the same tools make planning a casual bikepacking weekend drastically easier and safer.
24. How do I verify a checkpoint as an organizer? expand_more
The Organizer Portal allows you to define a radius around a checkpoint. If a rider's ping enters that radius, it is automatically logged and verified.
25. Who is behind Gravalist? expand_more
Gravalist is built by The Gravalist Company—a team of developers and ultra-cyclists dedicated to solving the real-world problems we faced on the road.
